About the CrossFit GamesThe event started in 2007 on the family ranch of Games director Dave Castro in Aromas, California. It has since moved to the StubHub Center in Carson, California.All prospective Games athletes must register for the CrossFit Games Open, a five-week, online, worldwide qualifier (209,585 people signed up in 2014). Those who rank in the top 40 of their home region receive an invitation to compete at regionals.The regions are broken up into North East, North Central, North West, Mid Atlantic, Central East, NorCal, SoCal, South West, South Central, South East, Canada East, Canada West, Asia, Africa, Latin America, Australia and Europe.
The top finishers of each region travel to Carson to compete for a cash prize and the title of 'fittest on Earth.' The Games also include a Masters category for individuals older than 40 and a Team category for groups of three men and three women.Individuals and teams are assigned a judge who ensures everyone completes their movements up to standard. If an athlete does not complete the full range of motion, the judge may hand out a 'no rep' and the athlete must repeat the movement to full standards.The CrossFit Games are an extension of the regimen - a contest of competitors' abilities to complete a series of movements designed to test their overall fitness.

Usually a combination of movements designed to encourage physical preparedness and well-rounded training.ChipperThis workout format is like a to-do list, with a series of movements to be completed as quickly as possible. It's designed to push the metabolic condition and endurance of athletes. One of the most popular chippers is called the 'Filthy Fifty' and is composed of 50 reps of the following movements: box jumps, jumping pull-ups, kettlebell swings, walking lunges, knees to elbows, push press, back extensions, wall balls, burpees and double-unders.DNF'Did not finish.'
DNS'Did not start.' EMOM'Every minute on the minute.' If a workout calls for a 10-minute EMOM of five push-ups and 10 air squats, the athlete would complete five push-ups and 10 air squats every minute for 10 minutes.FranThe most famous Girl WOD (see below).

An athlete may use a 'kip' or create momentum with an explosive hip movement.LadderThere are several platforms with prepared barbells that increase in weight. The athlete starts at the first platform, which is the lightest weight, and attempts to get to the heaviest platform by successfully lifting each platform's weight.PRPersonal record; an individual's heaviest weight lifted or fastest time. In the front-rack position, the grip is loosened and the elbows are pushed up higher so that the triceps are parallel to the floor.Rx'As prescribed.' Every movement has a standard, e.g., a pull-up must start with straight arms and finish with chin over the bar without any assistance.
Weights are assigned to a workout so that everyone uses the same standards. If a modification or scaling down in weight happens, then it is a non-Rx workout. In 2007, the first ever CrossFit Games were held on a dusty ranch in Aromas, CA. Competitors wore basketball shorts and Adidas sneakers.
There was no stadium, no ESPN coverage, and not a single muscle-up. The weights were lighter, the times were slower, and there were only three events. Now, we can look back at the early days of CrossFit and marvel at how far the standards have evolved when it comes to finding “The Fittest on Earth”.
But who’s to say that 10 years from now, we won’t be looking at today’s standards and doing the same thing? And that poses an interesting question: What will the Games look like in 2025?
